The area of Castel del Piano is known to have been inhabited in prehistoric times, but the town itself is mentioned for the first time in a document from 890 AD. From 1175 to 13321 it was a possession of the Aldobrandeschi family. After the fall of the Republic of Siena, it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Tuscany, located about 100 km south of Florence
and about 35 km northeast of Grosseto
and near the town of Montalcino.
Populated by 4,331. Arcidosso rises at 637 meters
above sea level on the slopes of Monte Amiata
between Siena and Grosseto.
The municipality of Castel del Piano contains the
frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets)
Montegiovi, Montenero d'Orcia, Casidore, Tepolini,
Collevergari, Leccio, Marrona and Piano di Ballo.
The city borders the following municipalities:
Arcidosso, Cinigiano, Roccalbegna, Santa Fiora.

by car to arrive at a skiing-station.
In about 45 minutes you can reach the
coastline near Grosseto.
Montenero d'Orcia and Montegiovi are two old hamlets. Around Montenero d'Orcia lots of fossiles are found from the time the ocean reached the little island of Montenero.
All around these centers are remains dating back to the Etruscans.
