Scansano is a city of 4.406 in habitants in the province of Grosseto, region Tuscany. In the town the Museo archeologico e Museo della vite e del vino is located, making part of Rete museale della Maremma (Colline del Fiora e dell'Albegna). Scansano is known through its wine, the Morellino di Scansano.
It also has lots of important ancient sites, like the Convento del Petreto, il Castello di Montepò, il Castello di Cotone and la località di Montorgiali.
Scansano borders Campagnatico, Grosseto,
Magliano in Toscana, Manciano and Roccalbegna.
Its frazioni are Baccinello, Montorgiali, Murci,
Pancole, Poggio Ferro, Polveraia, Pomonte and
Preselle.
This town lies at about 500 meters above sealevel.
It rises from a hill between the Valle dell'Ombrone
and the Valle dell'Albegna in a zone which is rich
with archeological remains of the Etruscan and
Roman times. Scansano is founded in the middle
ages and was controlled by the family
Aldobrandeschi until 1200. It was heridated by the
Sforza by marriage and was included in their
lands until Castell'Azzara. At the begining of
1600 Scansano became part of the Granducato
di Toscana.
Lots of these old days is reserved and well kept. One of it is the Mura di Scansano from which some important remains were found.
